The Supreme Court has postponed indefinitely its final ruling on the contentious Edo State Governorship Election case involving Senator Monday Obekpolo and Mr. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Presiding over the matter, Justice Garba Lawal announced that the verdict date would be set later, following the conclusion of legal arguments from all sides.
Mr. Ighodalo, through his legal counsel Ken Mozia, SAN, urged the court to overturn Obekpolo’s victory and declare him the rightful winner, claiming he had secured the highest number of valid votes cast.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by senior advocate Kanu Agabi, argued for a total dismissal of the appeal.
According to Agabi, the PDP and Ighodalo had already invalidated the election process by branding it as unlawful due to alleged violations of the Electoral Act 2022.
“The appellants cannot call an election illegal and still seek to benefit from it,” Agabi contended, urging the court to reject the appeal on the basis of contradiction and lack of substance.
