The Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide has condemned the reported inauguration of Pastor Josephine Ebhaguejezele as Iyeki, describing the act as a violation of Benin cultural heritage and tradition.
In a press statement jointly signed by the Culture-President, Mr. Iyamu Osaro, and Secretary General, Mr. Osayuki-Osa Benson, the group asserted that the title of Iyeki is deeply rooted in Benin tradition and cannot be altered by individuals, political actors, or government institutions.
“The position of Iyeki is not a political or governmental creation but a cultural institution established by Benin customs. It serves as a custodian of traditional affairs across various markets in the Benin Kingdom.”
According to the group, the Iyeki are traditionally elected by their peers across different markets in the kingdom, and the Apex Iyeki is chosen from among them. The final appointee is then presented to the Benin Royal Palace for blessings and spiritual endorsement.
The movement questioned the legitimacy of Pastor Ebhaguejezele’s inauguration, stressing that she does not meet the fundamental requirement of being a Benin woman.
They warned that any attempt to impose her or bypass cultural protocols would face resistance.
“We ask, is Pastor Josephine Ebhaguejezele a Benin woman? If not, then she cannot assume the role of IYEKI,” the statement declared. “Anyone, whether traditional chief or political figure, supporting her will have a problem with us.”
Citing the pronouncements of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the group reaffirmed that only Benin women are eligible for the position.
The Aiguobasinmwin Movement therefore urged all Benin women across the markets in the kingdom to commence the traditional process of electing a new Iyeki in accordance with long-established cultural norms.
They further advised women to strictly follow the traditional processes and eligibility requirements to ensure the sanctity of the institution is preserved.
