The Edo State Police Command has arrested a Benin-based social media content creator for allegedly staging her own kidnap in a bid to attract more followers to her TikTok page.
The 24-year-old TikToker, identified as Osarobo Omoyemen , popularly known as ” Madam Oil Rice” was apprehended after police investigations revealed that her widely circulated kidnap claim was entirely fabricated.
Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu , condemned the act, warning against the creation and circulation of fake content capable of causing public panic and undermining security efforts in the state.
According to Yamu, Omoyemen had posted a video alleging she was abducted along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City, then rescued by police officers who allegedly detained her at Akpata Police Station and collected ₦10,000 as bail.
However, detectives quickly uncovered inconsistencies in her story. Further investigation revealed that the video was staged, and Omoyemen herself confessed during interrogation that she orchestrated the drama solely to generate online engagement and boost her follower count.
Police added that she deleted an earlier clip showing an accomplice in the background urging viewers to follow her page — a detail that exposed her motive.
“The content was misleading and capable of inciting hostility against the Police while creating unnecessary tension in the state,” the PPRO stated.
Omoyemen was charged to court on Thursday, November, November 20, 2025, and efforts are underway to track down her accomplices.
The Police Command urged members of the public to always verify information before sharing, stressing that actions such as this would not be tolerated and would be decisively punished to deter misuse of social media.
