An Edo State-born scholar, Mathilda Okhuemoi, has been honoured with the 2026 John J. Hill Excellence Award by the Association of Lifelong Learners in the United States for her academic excellence and contributions to lifelong learning.
Okhuemoi received the award during the Association of Lifelong Learners Annual Luncheon and Business Meeting held on Tuesday at the Alumni Center of Ball State University, United States.
The association said the award followed her outstanding academic performance, having maintained a 4.0 Grade Point Average in both her Master’s degree in Sociology and doctoral programme in Adult and Community Education.
Speaking while presenting the award, Professor Bo Chang described Okhuemoi as a deserving scholar whose academic journey reflects the ideals of lifelong learning, excellence and community service.
Chang explained that her research focuses on the integration of adult learning theories with digital technologies to improve access to education and enhance learning outcomes for diverse learners.
He added that she is passionate about workforce and professional development initiatives aimed at underrepresented groups, particularly women in technology and adult learners returning to school.
According to him, Okhuemoi’s work promotes inclusive and technology-driven learning environments that enable learners to adapt and contribute meaningfully to society.
He further stated that aside from her academic achievements, Okhuemoi currently serves as a graduate assistant at University College and an academic advisor at the College of Health, Ball State University, where she guides students in their educational and career development.
“Through her advising, she empowers students to see learning as a continuous pathway for growth, helping them build long-term educational and career goals,” Chang said.
Before relocating to the United States in 2022 for graduate studies, Okhuemoi worked at Zenith Bank Plc where she rose to the position of Deputy Manager.
Chang noted that her experience in strategic communication, customer engagement and organisational leadership continues to influence her approach to adult education and lifelong learning.
Reacting to the recognition, Okhuemoi expressed gratitude to the Association of Lifelong Learners and Ball State University for the honour.
She said the award would further strengthen her commitment to promoting continuous learning and educational development.
“No achievement is accomplished in isolation. I am grateful to the mentors and learners who have shaped my journey. This award will continue to inspire my commitment to lifelong learning,” she said.
