A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Edo South senatorial aspirant, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, has dismissed criticisms surrounding reports that he is courting the support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, saying there is nothing wrong in seeking political backing.
Ogbeide-Ihama, who spoke in Benin City during a visit to party leaders in Edo South to formally declare his ambition, said political contests require strategic alliances, stressing that any move capable of strengthening his chances should not be misconstrued.
Addressing speculations, he said: “I have heard people say I went to meet Wike. If that is true, there is nothing wrong in it. Everyone needs support. If meeting Wike will guarantee me the ticket, that is fine by me.”
The former member of the House of Representatives maintained that the APC ticket for Edo South should not be treated as an experiment, warning against handing it to inexperienced aspirants under a “try your luck” approach.
According to him, “This ticket cannot be gambled with. It is not for learning on the job. All of us are qualified, but having served twice in the House of Representatives, I believe I have the experience needed to deliver from day one.”
He also reflected on his political battles while in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that despite alleged intimidation, including the removal of his campaign billboards, he still emerged victorious at the polls.
Ogbeide-Ihama expressed optimism that his chances would be stronger within the APC, saying his defection positions him better for victory.
He added that his track record in providing streetlights, empowerment vehicles and constituency projects stands him out among contenders.
He further appealed to party leaders to consider generational shift in leadership, arguing that younger politicians possess the energy required to represent the seven local government areas in Edo South effectively.
Earlier, Edo South leader and former Deputy Governor, Pius Odubu, described the contest as a family affair, urging all aspirants to conduct their campaigns peacefully, noting that only one candidate would eventually emerge as the party’s flagbearer.
Ogbeide Ihama had on Thursday flagged off his Senatorial campaign at his Oredo ward 2 amid large crowd of supporters.
